History

In 1940, my grandfather Joaquín Ortiz Moreno began to create his livestock with sheep from the Hidalgos. The Leonese merino herd has maintained the purity of this unique native breed over the centuries.. Their origins date back to the Middle Ages and it was not until the 18th century that they began to be exported to other places in the world..

The passion for this breed, It was inherited by my father who continued his legacy by maintaining a livestock farm with animals of maximum excellence.. Following the family tradition, my brother Feliciano and I assumed the responsibility of continuing the work of our grandfather and father.. To the 16 years, I bought nobles in Casas Caídas. On those occasions, the old mayoral of the Hidalgo, mr. Isidro, He taught me and a large part of what I am today, I owe it to him.

Fate wanted Mr.. Isidro will adopt me “lively”. He advised me. He discovered some notes of the race to me. A great knowledge that he transmitted to me and that I hope to be able to pass along with the family inheritance to the next generation..

Since then, I have known that one of my goals was to continue improving the genetics of that breed of sheep. Turning noble merino sheep into a reflection of my passion. A passion that was filled with the ancient advice and stories told by Mr.. Isidro. Words that I heard since I was young and that evoked the table. That ancient association of cattle breeders of the kingdom of Castile that dates back from the Middle Ages to 1836 which was abolished. Farmers focused on caring for the breeding and breed of sheep.

With that approach, I toured Spain and visited merino farms from Extremadura to Castilla. In that search I wanted to find Hidalga sheep like the ones my grandfather taught me to recognize., my father and mr. Isidro. But I didn't make it. Some time later, life gave me another teacher.. From him I learned about merino again and I ended up acquiring all the knowledge I was missing.. Knowledge that makes this sheep unique in the world. And with this, that legacy behind me, I continue, daily, excited to maintain the family heritage in the specimens of my livestock.

Our passion

The line of Hidalgas sheep runs through the veins of this family with a Merino tradition through several generations..

In the 21st century we continue to conserve the improved nobles, with a selection process of more than 30 years, we continue looking for improving animals, making a flock with common characteristics, Today it is the most homogeneous herd in Spain and Europe in pure genetics..

A young livestock preserving all the antiquity and purity of the breed, a team of 3 ranchers, Joaquin , Feli and Camino with a common goal, return to the merino sheep the splendor it deserves, adapting it to the times and the principles of sustainable livestock farming.

The image of our environment full of life and future.

Merino for everything!

In our livestock farm we have worked for more than 80 years in making animals with magnificent wool but without forgetting the meat part.

Merinos improving meat and wool production based on selection on the pure Hidalga line sheep without introducing genetics from other meat sheep breeds, considered today our merino line, as its own genetic line that has come to improve the old Hidalga line since its strictest conservation, generating a unique and intact nucleus in constant evolution towards the biomechanically perfect merino sheep with ultra-fine wool.

We are a livestock farm 100% registered in the book of the Merino Breed and today considered an improver of the breed, We have managed to maintain this wool prestige together with spectacular meat yields.

I have been linked to Merino livestock all my life.. My grandfather and my father were already pure Merino ranchers since 1970, My brother and I later took over and we have been working on those pure Hidalgas Merinas until we achieved the Livestock that we have today.. My legacy to the Merino breed is to combine two unique Merino lines, the noblewoman and that of Cesareo Rey, Today, unfortunately, both are extinct., that give rise to these ortice sheep. I am proud of my origins and hope to one day be able to pass these secrets on to the next generation..

The Merino breed is today our most important genetic heritage., ancient gift of kings, today we work to teach the world, that the origin of the breed remains intact with magnificent meat yields and extra-fine wool of 17 microns.
For me,My job is not only about spreading the value of our livestock , but to teach society how livestock farming can be sustainable, How consuming meat from extensive livestock farming is essential to conserve our forests. Spread and recover the tradition of activities such as Transhumance as activities that respect the environment that remember the importance that "shepherds" we have as guardians of the rural world.
